Replacing filter medium

Activated carbon works until it is full. A full carbon filter no longer works. It can even let substances go again, depending on the conditions. So the medium must be replaced in time. That means within its service life: the time in which the filter works well.

When is it time?

For chemical filter medium, a test of a sample shows how many days the medium will still work. That keeps a room with electronics in class G1. See Filter medium analysis.

How the change works

A vacuum truck sucks the used medium out of the filter vessel. This is quick. To empty and refill the filter, these parts can be arranged:

  • a crane truck with an operator
  • a vacuum truck with an operator
  • big bags for the used medium
  • transport of new medium in and old medium out
  • disposal of the medium
  • the paperwork and the waste stream numbers

The old medium is processed and disposed of responsibly. Rather not change the medium on site? Then the whole unit can be swapped. The filter with used medium is taken away. A unit with fresh or regenerated medium takes its place.

Regenerate or destroy

Full activated carbon can also be regenerated or destroyed. See Replacing or regenerating.

Maintenance can cover the whole job, from putting the filters in to swapping and removing them.
