Air measurements and analyses
Which filter fits depends on the substances in the air and how much of each there is. It also depends on the air flow, the temperature and the humidity. Don't know these well? Then start with a measurement.
Measuring gases and odour
An air analysis shows which gases are in the air and at what concentration. It uses GC-MS. For odour, it also shows the odour threshold and the odour level in ouE/m³. And it shows how far the odour spreads. Measurements use electronic devices. People in the field also smell and rate the odour.
For the odour level, the Dutch government site iplo.nl names the standard NEN-EN 13725 (olfactometry).
The results go into a report. It recommends a suitable filter. You can also use that report as proof. That helps when you must show that you stay within the limits of your permit. You may need to show this to the environmental agency, for example.
Is one gas analysis enough?
Often not. A gas analysis shows only one moment. The gases in an exhaust duct can be different the next day. How a test with a rented filter unit works is explained under Filter unit rental.
Measuring corrosion with copper and silver coupons
Gases that cause corrosion are found in server rooms, control rooms and MCC rooms, for example. They do more harm when it is warm and humid. Copper and silver coupons hang in the room for about 30 days. The layer that forms on them gives the corrosion class under ANSI/ISA-71.04-2013. See Corrosion protection.
Monitoring corrosion continuously
A corrosion monitor is also called an air purity monitor. It tracks all the time how much the air causes corrosion. It also measures temperature, humidity and the difference in pressure. Its copper and silver sensors can be replaced. The monitor stores its readings for 18 months and gives the corrosion class under ANSI/ISA-71.04-2013.
Filter medium analysis
Chemical filter medium is used up slowly. About 3 to 6 months after installation, a sample of the medium is taken. The lab gets the type of medium, the date it was put in and the date of the sample. It then measures how much active substance is left. The result tells you how many days the medium will keep working. That way you replace it in time and the room stays in class G1.
