Air filters for gases, odour and dust

The air filters on Industriële Luchtfilters are for industry, water management and buildings. The range has activated carbon filters, chemical filters, dust filters and complete filter installations. The tests, rental and service that go with them are here too. You choose by the substance that has to come out of the air. We explain which technique fits and why. When we say how a technique works, we name the source. That is a standard or iplo.nl, the Dutch government site on rules for the environment.

Next step: Start the selector (two questions: what has to come out, and how much air)

What has to come out of the air?

Each substance needs its own filter medium. Odour usually comes from volatile organic compounds (VOCs), hydrogen sulphide (H2S) or ammonia (NH3).

What usually works

See

Odour and VOCs, for example from solvents

Plain activated carbon. The compounds stick to the carbon.

Activated carbon filters

Hydrogen sulphide (H2S), an acid gas

Carbon with an alkaline impregnation

Gases: H2S

Ammonia (NH3), an alkaline gas

Carbon with an acid impregnation

Gases: ammonia

Gases that corrode electronics

Chemisorption. Alumina grains with a chemical that binds the gas.

Corrosion protection

Fine and coarse dust

Dust filters, sorted in classes by ISO 16890

Dust filters and HEPA

Source for adsorption and impregnation: Informatiepunt Leefomgeving, Adsorptiefilter (in Dutch). Dust filter classes: ISO 16890.

Not sure exactly what is in the air? That is common. A gas analysis shows only one moment. How a test with a rented filter unit works is explained under Filter unit rental.

What decides which filter fits

Advice starts with the substances in the air and the state of the air. It also depends on how much must be removed and how long the filter must last. See Filter installations.

Services

  • Measurements and analyses. Air tests and samples of filter media. Corrosion is measured too, with copper and silver coupons to ANSI/ISA-71.04-2013.
  • Rental. Mobile carbon filter units. They are ready for use within 2 to 3 days.
  • Media replacement. A vacuum truck takes the full medium out of the filter. It is taken away, processed and disposed of responsibly.

Sectors

The range is used at water and sewage plants and in industry. It is also used in data centres, archives and museums. And at biogas plants, in shipping, at airports, in hotels and restaurants, and in commercial buildings. In meat plants, odour often comes from blood and waste. At water plants and sewage pumping stations, H2S is mostly the cause.

Need more on one case? We have separate sites for that: corrosion in control and MCC rooms, air in archives and libraries, odour at sewage pumping stations, odour at wastewater treatment plants, industrial odour and process emissions, biogas cleaning and odour filters for restaurant kitchens.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a filter unit instead of buying one?

Yes, see Filter unit rental.

What is the difference between adsorption and absorption?

In adsorption, a substance sticks to a solid, such as activated carbon. In absorption, it dissolves in a liquid, as in a scrubber. Source: Informatiepunt Leefomgeving, Gaswasser (in Dutch).

When does activated carbon need replacing?

Before it is full. A full filter no longer works. It can even let substances go again.
